I Want A Job That Won't Lay Me Off Again!
Weary clients, numbed and dizzy from a walloping layoff that has now resulted in too many futile months of searching and no interviews or callbacks, come to me, asking for advice as to what fields of work they should choose that will be layoff-proof. I tell them there are no answers in times of economic downturns because every field of work has fallen victim to the axe in these bad times. There...

Monologue | Aired Friday night on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” on NBC: The unemployment rate went above 10% for the first time since 1983. Last week, economists were saying that the recession is finally over, but this week, all of the economists were laid off. So, it is tough.

Unemployment: New Claims Under 500,000.
The 500k hurdle was cleared with room to spare. This week’s Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report has been released on Wednesday, a day earlier than normal due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Initial claims dropped considerably to 466,000. Last week’s number was revised down 4,000 to 501k. This was inside the Bloomberg consensus range of 460k to 500k. From the report:
In the week ending Nov....

Even When Unemployed, Be Thankful For What You Do...
First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to all the 405ers out there working hard in their respective job hunts. It’s tough out there, we know it better than anyone. Some days are better than others but at the end of the day here we are, still unemployed, hoping and praying that some day in the near future someone out there will want to pay us to work for them.
“Am I good enough? Smart...

My Holiday Message.
Writer’s Preface: Below, you will find the preamble for the article I planned to write this week. In one of the lines below, I mentioned
“I have not yet received a legitimate (employment) offer.” The subject was to be a light hearted look at some of the employment scams. By now I have probably received an e-mail from almost every work at home scam that exists. I was not,...

Are You Humbled By Your Job Loss?
That may sound like an odd and perhaps offensive question to ask now, of all times, when you’re plagued with unpaid bills, holiday presents to buy—and no money to pay for any of it.
But we serve ourselves and others well, despite all the woe, to examine the subject of humility. It’s quite natural to be ho hum and carefree—oblivious to chaos—when we’re one of the “elite” to hold a job,...

Unemployment: New Claims H--Wait a Second...
I’ve revised my short term outlook for the unemployed negatively. But first, the weekly statistics. This week’s Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report has been released. Initial claims were “unchanged” at 505,000. This isn’t much comfort because it required an upward revision of 3,000 to last week’s number. This was inside the Bloomberg consensus range of 500k to 520k. From the report:

First rule of unemployment.
You don’t talk about unemployment.
Pursue the things that make you happy with childish enthusiasm.
Surround yourself with supporters and those who offer constructive criticism and points of view that you respect.
Shmexercise.
Forget about the coffee. (good riddance!)
Ask the people whose job you want questions. Lots of questions.
Write. Explore. Write some more. Explore more.

You Mean My Duke Degree Doesn't Automatically Get...
The majority of my professional experiences have been in various marketing capacities, and I thought that was it for me. I thought I figured out what I was going to do for the rest of my life by the time I was 20. And then I didn’t get a job in it, despite my internships, despite my networking, despite that Duke degree, so after months of searching, I took a position casting a reality show...

New Unemployment Claims Drop to 502k.
So close. I know I said that because of the lack of hiring the celebration point for the new claims number should be dropped from 500k to 400k. The truth is that I would celebrate just a little when we drop below the 500k mark. I’ll also celebrate a little when the numbers improve year over year, even if we’re comparing to a time when the economy was hemorrhaging jobs. It is true, though, that the...

Preface: As things stand right now, I am in a waiting phase. I had a total of 4 interviews within the last 7 days. One turned out to be for a position that was not for me. The second one did not work out. I feel the other 2 went well, but as of this writing, I am still waiting for an offer. Of course, I will follow up with them in the upcoming week, however I have found that employers have a...
