gingerfeet asked: I'm currently on unemployment, the available jobs in my field are super scarce & competitive (aren't they all). I've been offered a two week freelance stint - anyone know the maximum amount of time a person can work & not lose their benefits once they're back to being jobless?

Unemployment: New Claims Down.
This week’s Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report has been released. Initial claims fell to 470,000 while last week’s number was revised down 4,000. This wasn’t quite good enough to hit the Bloomberg consensus range of 430k to 460k. From the report: In the week ending Jan. 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 470,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous...

It's Time To Think About Taxes Again: The Tax Man...
Let me tell you How it will be. There’s one for you, Nineteen for me, ‘Cause I’m the taxman. Yeah, I’m the taxman.* *Beatles’ Taxman lyrics from their song of the same title. Just because you lost your job, doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay taxes. But there’s good news: You can deduct your job search expenses. In fact, you’d be surprised to know that most costs...

I Have A Confession To Make.
I have a confession to make. Up to this point in time I have been very careful about revealing my age. For the purpose of this writing, however I will mention that I am over the age of 50, so I fall into the category of older job seekers. Recently, I read an excellent article in Newsday about mistakes that older job seekers make. As a result, I have decided to put together my own list of ...

Unemployment: New Claims Up Again This Week.
This week’s unemployment statistics are moving in the wrong direction, but with a possible silver lining. The Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report has been released. Initial claims rose to 482,000. Last week’s number was revised up 2,000. This was above the Bloomberg consensus range of 435k to 450k. From the report: In the week ending Jan. 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted...

Howard's Open Letter.
Dear All, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your assistance during these past several months.  During this time I came face to face with one of my darkest fears:  Being out of work while I watched the family expenses continue to accrue in spite of my employment situation. I am pleased to tell all of you that I had my stare down with this fear, and I am now over it. ...

Imagine If They Ask You "How Did Your Last...
With statistics telling us there are 6.4 candidates for every job opening of late, it’s no surprise that applicants can expect to be asked anything out of the ordinary. Employers are taking advantage of the surplus of unemployed workers and feel they have their pick. So, with that comes a sort of entitlement feeling on their parts, to fire away and ask anything of the applicant that comes to...

This week’s Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report brings some bad news, even on a seasonally adjusted basis. Initial claims rose to 444,000. Last week’s number was revised down 1,000. This was toward the high end of the Bloomberg consensus range of 400k to 450k. From the report: In the week ending Jan. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 444,000, an increase of...

What Really Bothers Me About Not Having a...
Do you know what really bothers me about not having a full time steady paying job? When people ask me “Aren’t you freaking out? Aren’t you worried?” I know the people who matter know how hard I’m working and how motivated I am, but what really frustrates me is that people question my optimism. As I’ve said here before, and a fact that I will maintain to the...

The 10 Commandments of Job Search.
I am a big fan of the Biblical epics. Despite the fact that I have seen “The Ten Commandments” dozens of times, I will make sure to watch it the next time it is televised. As a result, I have decided that there should be commandments that also apply to job search.  Here are my 10 commandments of job search 1): Never Give up Everybody who has written anything about job search always makes this...

Let's hear YOUR story!
Hi. My name was Vicki. And I was downsized last year. And now I’m pursuing my passion, journalism - yipee! Writing a piece for a major NYC daily newspaper about folks who have been unemployed for over a year. Hence, this note to 405ers. I’d love to hear your story, how your morale has changed, how the job search has changed and how you’re answering questions on the interview...

What Are The Unemployed Saying On Tumblr?
As you may know, our site/blog here is hosted by the microblogging service Tumblr, whom we love dearly. We don’t say it enough, so here it is in all its glory… Thank you Tumblr. Imagine If You Had A Job.
I recently returned from a trip to Europe and happened upon a tiny country I had never heard, called Lichtenstein. It has a population of about 30,000 and is 62 square miles. It is one of the world’s oldest principalities, along with Monaco and the Vatican. According to our tour guide, the unemployment rate of this tiny country is 0.0. Everyone works! There are 12,000 people of working age and...

Feeling Very Revolutionary.
I’ve been unemployed for almost a year and it really blows! On top of that I have no health insurance! The other day I called up a couple of health insurance programs run by the great state of New York and realized that I make too much money to qualify for any of them. The conversation with the representative was actually quite funny. It went sort of like this: Johnny: Affinity Health Plus,...

Anonymous asked: Is it stupid to apply to numerous jobs for the same company through an external site? For instance, sanitationjobz dot com(doubt that's real) has you upload a resume and cover letter for jobs all over the country. Will they know they frown upon you applying for other positions within their organization?

Unemployment: New Claims Steady.
This week’s Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report is remarkably close to last week’s data point, on a seasonally adjusted basis. I graphed the unadjusted and adjusted claims for the last 10 years to highlight the importance and meaning of that statement. Initial claims rose slightly to 434,000. Last week’s number was revised up 1,000. This was toward the low end of the Bloomberg consensus...

6 Things That Keep Me Sane During My Job Search.
It is easy to have one’s sanity tested when you are in between jobs. For me one of the biggest challenges are the nightmares. I know it is just the subconscious at work, however it gets a bit tedious waking up in a cold sweat and running to the kitchen at 4:00AM to get a glass of water. I am fortunate to have company in my job search as many other individuals lost their jobs when my employer...

Hey, Hollywood, show us some love!
Come on, Hollywood, show us some love! It’s bitter cold outside, daylight hours are at a minimum, and the workplace is operating at mode= “sluggish.” Why not go to the movies?  You can find all manner of experiences in which to immerse yourself.  Fame and good fortune (or ill fortune)?  Step right this way.  Car crashes, explosions, special effects so intense your brain can’t process what...
