EXTREME CAREER MAKEOVER.

cnn moneyCNN has chosen three out-of-work professionals to get full career makeovers from a team of four top career experts. Result: One master plan for each, full of smart strategies to find a job in a tough market. The 405 Club will be monitoring this project, hoping to pick up some advice such as how to organize the job hunt, broaden your network, dress for interviews (hint: don’t wear black), keep from getting low-balled on salary, and manage your finances without a steady income.

Meet the panel: career coach Roy Cohen, executive recruiter John Ferneborg, image consultant Sandy Dumont, and financial planner Donald Lord (see their bios below); all of which were chosen because of their outstanding track records advising people during difficult times.

Meet the subjects:

Raul Camejo, 45, had always been in high demand as an internal auditor - until just before he was laid off earlier this year, when calls from recruiters suddenly dried up.

Marketing executive Jane Garcin, 51, put her job search on hold in August to care for her dying mother; by the time Garcin began looking in earnest at the beginning of this year, the economy had tanked.

Project-management specialist Robert Bertrand, 62, thought he had planned his retirement perfectly so that he could compete on the Senior Professional Golf Tour. He got to live his dream for three years. But when his wife lost her job and his stock options evaporated in the market crash, he was suddenly back hunting in a market that has little interest in older workers, no matter how experienced they are.

As most of us know here at The 405 Club, the process of landing a job may not be quick. Recent studies show it takes at least four to six months for the average professional or middle manager to get the job he or she wants. But despite today’s grim headlines, the fact remains that millions of people are hired each month - 4.2 million during March alone.

We love this project.  On behalf of all downsized workers, we send a huge thanks to CNN for pulling together this talented panel to help these three.  It’s extremely important to have someone on your side with experience in job hunting to help guide you along the way.  I’m lucky enough to have our resident one-stop career counselor Gloria Schramm help me.  She’s the best.  If you’re in need of a career coach we also suggest career coaches Vicki Salemi and Colette Ellis.

  • Roy Cohen has been a career coach since 1991 with the Five O’Clock Club, an outplacement organization, and provided career counseling at Goldman Sachs for a decade. He is also on the faculty at New York University as part of its executive coaching program.
The financial planner
  • Donald Lord is a fee-only financial planner with Family Firm Inc. of Bethesda, Md. He had a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force before becoming a personal-finance adviser for CUNA Mutual Life Insurance and American Express Financial Advisors.
The image consultant
  • Sandy Dumont, founder of theimagearchitect.com, has advised politicians, employees of Fortune 500 companies, and the U.S. military on how to enhance physical appearance and speaking style for maximum effect. A former model, she is the author of seven books on image enhancement.
