HAPPY BOSS’S DAY.

Boss DayBoss’s Day is known as a commercial holiday invention, the likes of which might be in the same imaginative category of, “Merry Christmas From My Cat to Yours,” but there’s actually a U.S. history to its origins.*

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if bosses could post Help Wanted ads that sound like this? In keeping with the spirit of the day, I propose the following advertisement:

“Friendly employer looking for friendly people who view work as one big fun time while performing services and selling products that make the world a fun place to live in. Come in and show us what you can offer in the way of life experience, job experience, skill level, personality and commitment. Name your salary if we hire you. Flexible and understanding that you have urgent personal business and crises come up that you need time off with pay on the honor system and with mutual respect. Will work with you. Not picayune, secretive, manipulative or mean. Looks for ways to streamline functions and duties, not just to save money, but to keep employees from stressing out, negatively affecting everyone and every operation. Will uphold and back you respectfully in and out of the office. Will keep his/her word at all times. Will pitch in when the workload becomes too much. Will invite you and your family onto his/her yacht and to party clambakes on the beach of summer home. Will completely underwrite your medical insurance. Gives bonuses and platonic hugs to everyone in front of everyone else; nothing to hide; motives pure. Invites you to share in stockholder success. Will never use or abuse your pension rights. Allows naps. Generous with sick days. Doesn’t believe in firing or laying off because human commodity is too valuable and irreplaceable and everyone can shine, given the right circumstances. Will labor for those right circumstances for everyone. Treats everyone with equal importance because the company needs each and everyone of you. Will make you privy to company secrets before you read about it in the news. Would rather revamp internal finances, shift to different products or services. Loves folks over 50. If business should close down, promises to pay all wages of those 50+ up to age 65 whether there is a job or not. Boss who wants to be known as contributing to the economy and society as a reputable, caring, civil institution, changing the way people perceive institutions and making the definition of “bureaucracy” obsolete.”

Wishing everyone a good boss and plenty of work to go around!
