I'm currently on unemployment, the available jobs in my field are super scarce & competitive (aren't they all). I've been offered a two week freelance stint - anyone know the maximum amount of time a person can work & not lose their benefits once they're back to being jobless?

Hi Gingerfeet,

We actually reached out to a rep at the NYS Dept of Labor Supervisor on this one. That’s how much we love our 405ers.

call 405 clubShe suggests it is best to call 1-888-209-8124. She started giving us answers but realized there were too many issues involved and she doesn’t want to inadvertently mislead or confuse you/us.   It’s not so hard to get through to a live person anymore, the rep claims.

We would all feel more comfortable if you would call the Claims Center because the rules are so complex and each person’s situation is different. She said, let it be on them to answer her questions, as that is strictly their domain up in Albany since NYS benefits claims became automated and we don’t want to give her the wrong info.

Here are the steps to reach a live person. Please be patient and persist. You WILL get through. It may take time or several tries.

You can also read the handbook sent to you or go to “questions and answers” on the labor site where you log in each week to report.

There are so many variables and rules, the rep feels it’s best for you to call and get it straight from the horse’s mouth.   I wish we had easy answers for this but we hope this helps! Best of luck!
