No Job Nomad: Goodbye New York, Hello Everywhere Else.

Stuff White People Like:

#26: Manhattan

#70: Difficult breakups

#82: Hating Corporations

#120: Taking a year off (in conjunction with #19: traveling)

Hi, my name is Kelsy and I’m a cliché. I’m unemployed, traveling, and blowing all of my money on #115 from “Stuff White People Like:” learning a new language (or at least that’s what I tell everyone who doesn’t see the logic in quitting my job in the middle of a recession since I don’t have a clue what I’m doing).

Like any good story, my journey into unemployment began with heartbreak —appropriately enough in the workplace (oh hai believe what they say about interoffice dating).  To give some background:

The Time: February 2009.

The Situation: I was miserable with my love life, tired of my job, and exhausted in New York AKA I was little miss barrel of laughs. I had spent too many nights crying at home to a copy of Eat, Pray, Love that my mom sent over to “heal my heart.”  All the calls at my marketing position were ending with me angrily slamming down the phone and happy hour became a tear fest at a Thai restaurant on 36th street now deemed “the bathtub.” Yes, it was time for a change.

So Basically: Changes were to come.

Present Day: A year later I’ve quit my job, saving enough to hopefully last 12 months traveling through Latin America…

For the next bit I’ll be writing to you from Buenos Aires, counting my pesos and mastering the art of having too much time on my hands. While my entrance into the 405 Club was a calculated choice, it’s one that has left me with the same questions any other member would have: what’s the next step? For now, I’ll take deciding between Argentine or Chilean wine with my asado over wondering how to beef up my resume on Monster.com. Que sera, sera!
