Let’s hear YOUR story!

vicki salemiHi. My name was Vicki. And I was downsized last year. And now I’m pursuing my passion, journalism - yipee! Writing a piece for a major NYC daily newspaper about folks who have been unemployed for over a year. Hence, this note to 405ers. I’d love to hear your story, how your morale has changed, how the job search has changed and how you’re answering questions on the interview regarding your search. Please email me — vicki@vickisalemi.com. The piece will have a positive tone and offer tips to fellow job seekers. Thanks.

INBOX 405: WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST?

inbox 405(Ed. Note) The Inbox 405 is our chance to hear from you.  It’s your chance to do the writing and we do the reading! Join our previous and current discussions here.

With unemployment comes many decisions, many of which are financial.  What are you really missing since you’ve been jobless and therefore lack your normal income you’ve been so accustomed to? Or, maybe it’s not financial at all — perhaps the only thing you miss is the camaraderie of the office, the silly banter and basic interaction with others on a daily basis?

Let us know — we would love to hear from you in the comments section.

INBOX 405: WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK?

Throughout a job search it’s necessary to constantly assess your hunt, your tactics, your efforts and your emotional well-being.  I’m hoping this Inbox 405 question will lead you to take a step back and ask yourself, “What’s holding me back? Why have I not been hired yet?” Perhaps you’re shooting to high? Maybe too low? Perhaps you don’t spend enough time networking and too much time sending blind resumes? Are you getting out enough? Are you a better hire now than you were when you were laid off? Have you been working on your skill set during unemployment?

Ask yourself these kinds of questions and please do share with the club.  We can all learn from one another.

INBOX 405: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEAD UP WHEN YOUR UNEMPLOYED BUDDY GETS A JOB AND YOU DON’T.

inbox 405(Ed. Note) The Inbox 405 is our chance to hear from you.  It’s your chance to do the writing and we do the reading! Join our previous and current discussions here.

So you’ve been unemployed for months and fortunately had a fellow unemployed buddy to confide in and commiserate with.  You’ve joked about who is going to get a job first, how your life will change when you get a job, or how your routine will be adjusted.  When all of a sudden… BAM!

S/He’s got a job and you’re still on the hunt.  Of course you’re extremely happy for her/him, but all of a sudden you find yourself wondering why you haven’t been able to land a gig, even more than usual.

Has this happened to you? How have you coped with it?
